Calling all skincare-buffs with a sweet tooth, we’ve got bad news for you. Sugar is conspiring against your complexion. Fried and oily foods have long been associated with breaking you out, but sugar could be worse. Your local beauty authorities at Colair Beauty Lounge & Med Spa are here to give you the 411.
Before you reach for a sugar cookie this holiday season, you should know that sugar actually breaks down collagen. You know, the same collagen you’re vigorously trying to get to produce in your face to keep a youthful appearance. In a process called “glycation” is when sugar molecules attach to proteins and other molecules like collagen, leaving a loss of the skin’s elasticity.
Another reason why the hot cocoa is a terror is the spike of insulin production. Large amounts of insulin can lead to inflammation of the skin, increased oil production and breakouts. When you chow-down on a snickerdoodle, the insulin makes androgen hormones go wild, which increases cell production and boosts sebum (the stuff blackheads are made out of).
With so much holiday cheer all around, it’s so hard not to partake in decadent goodies. But if you’re really suffering from sugar cravings, it might be your body letting you know you’re lacking in minerals. Don’t take our word for it: Dr. Harold Lancer, Kim K’s (and everyone else in Hollywood)’s dermatologist told New York Magazine “Sugar can weaken the immune system, and a suppressed immune system is bad at fighting off bacteria.”. Sugar BAD!
